Looking for Youth Ministry Articles

I’ve been working a lot on a new look for our Spanish website (ministeriojuvenil.com), and I could really use help with content.

If you would like to contribute to training youth workers in Latin America, and you have experience in youth ministry, I’d love for you to write an article on youth ministry for the site. I’ll have it translated, we’ll post it, and we’ll even include a link to your blog or website.

If you’re interested, please leave a comment here, and I’ll get back to you. Of course, I reserve the right to decide what content gets put on the site.

This is an opportunity for you to be a global youth worker. Don’t miss out!

Last Day of Classes

Today was the last day of class at the seminary for this school year. I’ve got a flood of emotions inside. I’m excited, proud, reflective, a little sad, emotional, happy, and all kinds of other things that I can’t describe.

If all goes according to plan, and all of the work gets turned in, Huberto will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in youth ministry. He’ll be the first certified graduate in youth ministry in Latin America. In my opinion, he has definitely proven himself as a leader and great youth pastor.

I’ll write more about it later, but for now, I wanted to say how crazy it is that four years have gone by, and we are finally seeing some fruit from the labor.

What’s a Global Youth Worker?

Series: Global Youth Ministry
This post is part of a series on Global Youth Ministry. Be sure to check out part 1 – Why Global Youth Ministry is Important.

Before you talk about a subject, you should define terms so that everyone is on the same page. When I’m talking about global youth ministry, I have a concept in my mind, and I’m sure not everyone thinks as crazy as I do, so I wanted to define some terms for you, at least in my mind, when it comes to global youth ministry and global youth workers.

Global Youth Ministry – Ministry to young people throughout the world. I’m not talking about a U.S. based youth group going on a mission trip, while that can contribute to international youth ministry. I’m talking about the 97% of youth population that lives outside of the United States and deserves the same opportunity for care and ministry that the students in your local high school deserve.

Global Youth Worker – A youth worker who is aware of the need to minister to young people all over the world and is doing their best to actively participate in ministry to young people regardless of their nationality or geographical location. This youth worker sees beyond his own youth group and dreams about personally impacting students throughout the world.

There are reports that 87% of the 3.6 billion people who live in Asia do not personally know a Christian (link). One out of every four young people on the planet live in China. There is a great need for international youth ministry. The youth pastors I know are doing a great job of ministering to their students. I just want to see the same opportunity for young people worldwide.

How would you define global youth ministry or a global youth worker?

Talents and Ministry

Last night at youth group, there were two things I think were really great.

The first one was that they recognized the youth group soccer team for winning a championship, but every single player who spoke talked about the fact that winning or losing wasn’t the goal of the team. The team exists to share a Christian testimony to the other teams they play against. They all are in a discipleship group, and they have had to work on their attitudes and actions on the field in order to maintain a good testimony in front of others.

The second great thing at youth group meeting tonight was a girl named Valerie who wants to study cinematography. She had a school assignment, and her teacher told her to make a short film. She made a great little short, and they screened it at youth group last night. A lot of the students in the group were in her film, which is very evangelistic. She’s showing it in school on Wednesday morning.

Both of these things stand out to me because they are examples of students using talents in ministry. There are so many ways to be useful for the Kingdom. Youth ministries need to provide opportunities for students to minister, using whatever means necessary.

What are you doing to help students use their talents to serve?

Generation YouTube

Generation Youtube free ebookA while ago, I published a free ebook about how to use online video for ministry, especially youth ministry. I never really announced it much, but I wanted to post it here on the site so it could be useful for others.

It’s got ideas on how to put video on the web and how to use web video in youth ministry. My favorite part, and I think the part that is the most useful, is the part on ways to use online video for youth ministry.

The Greatest Need

At the end of my class today, I asked my seminary students what they thought the greatest need was in the lives of Mexican young people. The only rule was that they couldn’t say the typical answer of “Jesus.” After thinking about it a little, they gave me great answers, all of which centered around the same theme.

Oscar said that he thought the greatest need is direction. Young people in Mexico have lots of potential, but they have little direction and guidance. They are wandering and thus get into trouble.

Chaire gave her opinion, and she said that they need love. Young people need someone to demonstrate love to them in a tangible way, because they are not receiving the right kind of love.

Huberto agreed with both Oscar and Chaire, and he said that Mexican young people need good mentors. They need someone who will invest their life in them and share with them the struggles of life. He said that many young people in the area are eager to make a difference, but they have nobody to guide them and help them accomplish their goals.

Abraham walked in for my next class, so we asked him the question. He responded by saying that he thought the biggest need in the lives of young people was someone who would take interest in them and share with them about their own life. He said they need someone who will come alongside them and be open to listen and accept them, sharing with them the struggles of life.

Isn’t this what youth ministry is all about? It’s why we are training these youth pastors at the seminary. I want to see them make an impact where there is a need. I believe they know what to do, and they are on their way to doing it in each of their ministries. They are providing direction, love, and guidance. They are great mentors and role models, and they have an incredible grasp on the needs of their students.
