Twitter for Missionaries

I absolutely LOVE twitter. It’s been a great way for me to meet new people. I’ve never personally met anyone who follows me on twitter, but I have come to know many people through using it.

A lot of people (including my wife) think that twitter is a waste of time, but I was thinking about the benefits of using twitter for missionaries. Some of these are things that I’ve done, and some of them are things I hope to do with twitter.

5 Ways for Missionaries to Use Twitter

  • Set up a special profile for prayer. (Ours is twitter.com/PoulettePrayer). With this profile, you can allow people to sign up and receive your most timely prayer requests.
  • Get to know new people to expand ministry opportunities. You can connect with new people on twitter, which may or may not lead to ministry alliances and new partnerships.
  • Show people that missionaries are normal people, too. The great thing about twitter is its social aspect. You can tweet about what you ate for lunch or about serious things. You answer the simple question of what you are doing right now.
  • Keep up with old friends from home who are not near you. Sometimes, we feel isolated and far away from everyone we know. With twitter, you can keep up with friends and family (or even complete strangers).
  • Stay informed about your niche. If you’re a pastor, you can find out what other pastors are thinking. If you’re a youth worker, you can meet other youth workers and talk about ministry. It’s a great way to keep informed about what’s happening in the world of ministry.

So, if you’re not on twitter, what are you waiting for? If you sign up, make sure to follow me @drpoulette and get our prayer updates @PoulettePrayer.

St. Pete Times and Serving the Servants

Recently, the St. Petersburg Times ran an article on D&D Missionary Homes, a great ministry in St. Pete that provides housing, clothing, and other things to missionaries who are visiting the United States again.

D&D exists to “serve the servants” and operates on donations from individuals and churches in order to do so. They have furnished houses, a place for missionaries to shop for clothes (for free), and basically provide a home away from home for those who minister overseas.

Unfortunately, although they provided a phone number, the St. Pete Times didn’t link to the D&D missionary homes website in their article, so here is the link to D&D missionary homes. Be sure to check them out and donate if you want to support their ministry.

Here’s the St. Petersburg Times article.

Have you heard of any other ministries like this one?

Free Software I love

I wrote a guest post over at Life in Student Ministry about free software that I love.

It’s a list of downloadable software that you can use for photos, audio, video, office/publishing, security and utilities, study, and web stuff. Check it out.

What are some other free applications I should have included?

Spanish Youth Ministry Website

The last few days, I’ve been working pretty hard on a new design for our Spanish youth ministry website, ministeriojuvenil.com.

I haven’t dedicated as much time to it as I would like, but it is a part of our ministry that has an impact all over the world. For example:

  • People from 28 different countries visited the site last month.
  • 21 of those countries are in Latin America (that makes sense, it’s a Spanish website)
  • The average visitor visits more than 3 pages when they visit, meaning they are reading more than just the home page. They are getting into the articles.
  • The social network for youth workers has 67 members signed up, creating a space for youth workers to interact with each other and support each other.

I’m looking forward to seeing this part of the ministry grow as our ministry grows. Keep praying for us as we train youth workers in Latin America.

Generation YouTube

Generation Youtube free ebookA while ago, I published a free ebook about how to use online video for ministry, especially youth ministry. I never really announced it much, but I wanted to post it here on the site so it could be useful for others.

It’s got ideas on how to put video on the web and how to use web video in youth ministry. My favorite part, and I think the part that is the most useful, is the part on ways to use online video for youth ministry.

You can download it here: Generation Youtube
