Field Report 2005

For the annual YMI board meeting, I have been asked to send in a report on the Latin American ministry. This includes the state of the ministry right now as well as goals for the next year. Here are some of my goals for next year.

  • Recruit at least 5 new students for the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary to start studying in August 2006, preferably from different regions of Mexico.

  • Work to approve 2 churches in the Mexico City area
  • Develop a once a month informal training seminar and/or youth workers roundtable for interested youth workers in Mexico City
  • Mentor and train those seminary students who are not in the youth ministry program but are working with young people in their Christian service work
  • Finish translating and adapting the 4 year seminary curriculum
  • Continue to research and promote youth ministry in Mexico
  • Raise more funds for the ministry in Latin America (wanna help?)
  • Strengthen our network with other youth ministry trainers in Latin America
  • Conduct a Youth Emphasis Week at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary in the fall of 2006

If you’d like to see the whole report, send me an email and I will get it to you.

First Seminary Retreat

All the faculty, staff, students, and administration people from the seminary went to Tepotzotlan today for a spiritual retreat. We were supposed to leave at 7 AM, but really we didn’t leave until 8. We didn’t get home until 7:30 PM. So, I’m tired.

The retreat itself was fun and much needed for the seminary. I think it brought us together as a family. I enjoyed getting to spend time with everyone outside of the usual circumstances. The students seemed to really enjoy themselves, and I feel that they were blessed by the experience. I also had a chance to talk to many of them who are working with young people in their Christian Service. We are going to plan a retreat/camp for the young people of our churches in March. I think it will be good to get together with those guys and plan something.

2005 First quarter final grades

I just finished grading the tests and papers for my 2 youth ministry classes of the first quarter at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary. Overall, the students did well. I only had 4 students this quarter, so it wasn’t that hard. The first year students had to write a “My Philosophy of Youth Ministry” paper, and the second year students had to read, summarize, and apply Josh McDowell’s book “Right from Wrong.”

They seemed to really learn a lot this quarter, and I am looking forward to next quarter. I got my schedule of classes today, and I have an 8 AM class (Wednesday and Friday). I remember when I was in college, I would NEVER sign up for an 8 AM class. It seems that one is coming back around to get me.

Now, I’m going to prepare for the two classes I will be teaching. “Youth Culture” and “Foundations of Youth Ministry 2.”

What we did yesterday

Yesterday, I preached for the first time in more than a year at the seminary. The topic was vigilance, and the text was Matthew 24. It went well. I had my usual 2 classes, which are winding down for the quarter. We finish up this week with classes, and then next week are finals. I am giving my finals this week, so next week I will be spending preparing for the next quarter’s classes. We also had lunch with the pastor of Capital City Baptist Church and his wife. Of course, we ate pizza tonight, since it was Tuesday, two for one night at all the pizza places. I finished up the night carving a pumpkin. I’ll share some pictures later. This year I chose a Scooby Doo design.

New YM students 2005

oscar and celsoOscar and Celso are the 2 guys who are in the first year youth ministry classes this year at the seminary. Celso is from Cuernavaca, the town 2 hours from Mexico City where we studied Spanish, and Oscar is from Mexico City. He attends First Baptist Church Mexico City. They are both pretty good students, and we have some good discussions in class.

First Week

So, tomorrow is the last day of the first week of classes at the seminary. It has been a good week, overall. The first day of class, I arrived late because I thought the class time had been changed. I have been putting in a lot of hours at the seminary, so I am tired. I have class two times a week at 7 am. The work doesn’t stop on the weekend. Saturday nights are youth meetings at church. Sundays are services at church. Monday is a good day to rest when there is no faculty meeting. Hopefully, I’ll get some rest this weekend. Maybe Sunday? Who knows.

Busy preparing

I’m busy this week preparing for my classes at the seminary. Class starts next Tuesday, so I’ve been translating, thinking, and praying about the content of the classes I will be teaching this quarter. They are: Principles of youth ministry and Foundations of youth ministry 1. Should be a good quarter.
