Be an Encouragement

The comment you see above was a comment that we received on our Spanish youth ministry website. I haven’t been posting there lately because I’ve been too tired at night to write and busy with the kids or with other things during the day.

But it’s comments like this that keep me writing.
The translation says:

Dennis I want to thank you for your time. I usually come to the website when I am discouraged. And I find encouragement here, in the inspiration that I receive from your work. Thanks again.

Many times we don’t know how much of an encouragement what we do is to other people. You can be an encouragement without really trying or knowing it. I wonder if Victor understands how much of an encouragement his comment is to me. His comment will encourage me to keep writing.

Leaving the Ministry

No. I’m not leaving the ministry. No. We’re not leaving Mexico. “Leaving the ministry” was simply the title of a sermon I heard last week during chapel at the Seminary.

One of the Missions professors preached about the process of how those in ministry end up dropping out of ministry. He said that the process involves Disappointment, Deception, and Disillusion.

It was a good sermon, and I think it was useful for us.

From Ordinary to Extraordinary

Earlier this week Janell posted about these lighting fixtures on Savingyoudinero.com, and I couldn’t stop thinking about how insane it is that these old plastic containers have been re-purposed into art. The insane thing is that they are being sold for more than $100 each.

I’m not sure who in their right mind would pay $107 for an old plastic jug that is now a lamp, but the thing that has captured my attention is how if someone has found a way to take something ordinary and turn it into what, apparently, somebody thinks is extraordinary (and is willing to pay $107 for it).

Wait until your Father gets Home

“Just wait until your father gets home.” I can’t tell you how many times I heard that phrase as a kid. There are only really two options for kids when a father returns either from work or from a long trip: A prize or a punishment.

Today I preached in chapel at the Seminary about 1 Peter 5:1-4. My basic premise was that the “chief Shepherd” is coming back and will as us to give an account of the ministry that we have done with His flock, so we should be busy doing what we need to be doing as leaders.

You can be an Answer to Prayer

Last Friday, we were invited to a birthday party for another missionary kid who has recently moved to Mexico from another Latin American country. He would be turning six years old, and his name is Nathan. Our Nathan was so excited to get to play with another six year old boy who speaks English (our kids have lots of friends, but they all speak Spanish).

Friday was a holiday for us (Mexican Independence Day), and to be honest I didn’t really want to go out on a day when I could just hang out at home all day. But we went to the birthday party anyway. When we got there, I was happy we went because we were the only family with kids who were at the party. Our kids had a blast playing with the four kids from the other Nathan’s family.

The other Nathan’s mom said to us, “You guys are an answer to prayer. We have people in the USA who have been praying that our kids will find friends here.”
