Our Most Important Ministry

Our family is involved in many things. Training youth workers for local churches involves teaching youth ministry courses at the Mexican Baptist Theological Seminary, overseeing ministries in other countries, speaking at youth events, and other important things.

With all of the work that needs to be done, it’s easy for me to get caught up in being busy at “the office” and forget about the most important ministry that takes place in our family: the ministry of discipling and raising our kids.

Independence Day in Mexico

We celebrated Mexican Independence Day with the Seminary Director’s church. It was a fun night full of Mexican history (we failed miserably at the trivia questions…but so did everyone else), delicious food, music, games, and fun.

Our kids dressed up for the occasion, and we had a great time. You can check out our pictures on Flickr or in the slideshow below.

8th Anniversary in Mexico

Yesterday was a busy day! August 27, 2003, we packed up our 7 suitcases and moved to Mexico to begin training youth workers in Latin America. 8 Years have passed so fast! A lot has happened since then–our family has grown and our ministry has seen some great things happen. We also have a lot more stuff.

Yesterday was also the end of the first certificate course of the year. We had the students at the house for lunch. It was also the opening service for the Seminary’s school year. We are looking forward to classes being in session again. It’s been a while since Dennis has taught, and he’s ready to get back into the classroom.

Here’s a quick picture from the service yesterday. The pastor of First Baptist Church of Satelite preached about stepping out of your comfort zone and making history. That is exactly what God called us to do 8 years ago, and it is what He keeps calling us to do today.

Shiloh Walks!

Shiloh has started to take a few steps. She especially likes to get Benjamin and jump on him. Check the quick video.

The Homeschool Adventure Begins

Our first day of homeschool started off a little later than we had thought. The kids all slept in, so that means the parents did, too. After breakfast we were ready to start school.

Nathan did great, except for a few little things. The “Handwriting without tears” book didn’t come with a no tear guarantee. It was the most difficult time of the day. Not because Nathan doesn’t know how to write, but because the paper that came with the book was different than the kind of paper he had used in Kindergarten. He was upset, but he overcame it and finished the work.

Ben’s Third Birthday

Yesterday Ben turned 3 years old. Hard to believe he’s already three. Here are a few videos of our family celebration.

We’re back in Mexico!

On Tuesday, June 14, we woke up early in the morning, got a van from Grace Bible Church to the Tampa airport, and checked our 8 suitcases, baby carseat, and stroller. Then we went through security with everyone and all of our carry on luggage. We looked like a traveling circus! Then we got on the plane to Ft. Lauderdale, and after a brief layover (we had about 10 minutes to get on our plane to Mexico), we were off to Toluca.

We landed in Toluca, and then we had to lug everyone onto a shuttle because the plane didn’t land at an actual gate. After what seemed like forever in the immigration line, we finally were reunited with all of our luggage we had checked (whew). In customs, they asked if all of the clothes we had brought was for us. Janell and I looked at each other and smiled, knowing how many clothes three kids go through in a week. We got the okay to leave, and were very happy to see our friends who were going to pick us up and drive us the hour it takes to get from Toluca to our house.

As we were loading all of our things in the van, Nathan was suddenly nauseous. After doing what he needed to do all over the sidewalk, we were off in the van. After about twenty minutes, we were stopped by a policeman asking us why we had so many bags and what we do in Mexico. While explaining what we do, I had to warn him that Nathan was sick and to be careful not to stand too close. He was satisfied with our answers and didn’t ask for any money or anything, so we continued on. Arriving in Mexico City, we were welcomed by the everyday occurrence of traffic, but we finally made it home.

We topped off the day by eating tacos from our favorite taco place. Nathan wasn’t sick anymore, and we were all happy. Shiloh even liked her first taste of real Mexican tacos.

Thanks for praying for our trip. Please keep praying for us. This Saturday is graduation at the Seminary. We will be celebrating the graduation of 3 diploma students and one bachelor’s degree student. We’ll post pictures next week.
