The Bible Illuminated

There’s a new product coming to North America in the Fall of 2008 called Bible Illuminated. It is an oversized (8 ¼ x 11 ½), full-color, 264-page glossy magazine that has striking, provocative, contemporary photographs. It uses the Good News Translation (GNT) and it is aimed to be less intimidating than traditional Bibles.

You can see what it’s all about online at Illuminated World.

One of the cool things is that it is the actual text of the Bible put into a format that is easy to read and feels more like something you would pick up and look at today, either on the subway, the doctor’s office, or anywhere else.

Here’s a video of the creator of the project talking about the motive behind it and what he hopes happens as a result.

Very cool concept… I checked IT out in a bookstore yesterday. Not like any Bible I’ve read before!

Does the Bible really need updating though? It’s THE BIBLE, you know? It’s wonderful the way it is and should be read the way it’s meant to be read, not as a magazine.

Hi Eva…thanks for your comment. I understand what you’re saying.

However, we shouldn’t forget that the Bible was written on scrolls, and it took a while to be put together the way we have it today.

So, I guess, we have always put it into a readable format.

The text of this magazine style Bible is exactly the text of the Bible (although it is a more contemporary version).

I haven’t actually read this version, but I think it’s a good way to get the hands into someone who might not pick up the thick family Bible that sits on the coffee table.
