Soccer

Today we went to play soccer in a different part of town. We rented the field and invited the neighborhood kids to play. When we arrived, there were about 35 of them waiting for us to play. We had a great time, and after playing a few games, we stopped the games, gathered them around in a circle, and shared testimonies and the gospel with them. It was a great time, and now we need to follow up.

The pueblo we were in does not have a Baptist church, and it probably has very little if any evangelical presence. It’s a great opportunity for us to work there, and it’s a great challenge to continue there in the future.

Loooooooong Day

Today was a good, long day. The group arrived without any problems, except that they arrived to the place I wasn’t waiting for them. You see, in the Mexico City airport, most international arrivals from the US come through a specific gate. The board says they will arrive through that gate. Of course, the group didn’t come through that way; they came through a different way. Also, Brandon lost his guitar. We’ve gotta work on getting that back tomorrow.

The good news is they arrived. Then we went to eat. At the restaurant, we watched the US beat Mexico in the Gold Cup final. That was great. After resting, we went to play soccer and basketball at the courts around town. It was a lot of fun. We met some people. We got to hang out with them and really get some good relationships started (hopefully).

Then we went to Los Arcos to eat tacos. At the table, Brandon got to talk to some of the soccer players who went with us to eat. It was a great conversation. It’s a conversation that I hope will get to continue as the week goes on. Anyway, I’m tired. Good night.

New Kitchen

While we’re in the US for the summer, our kitchen is being remodeled. They have completed a lot of the work, so I took these pictures for Janell to see the progress.

We used to have old brown tile and white cabinets with green tiles on the walls. Not anymore. They’ve done a great job, and the kitchen looks much better. Click a picture to enlarge it.

Book quote

I read “You Can Childproof Your Home, but They’ll Still Get in” by Dave Meurer today on my way to Mexico City. It’s an easy read book with some pretty funny insights into the world of fatherhood.

My favorite part of the book was this:

The reality is that the little kid loves his dad. He loves being with Dad, and doing what Dad does. If Dad took him fishing, he would love fishing. If Dad took him to the zoo, he would love the zoo.

Our job is to help our kids love the right things. To guide them toward God, toward the good and noble. To teach right and wrong and honesty and kindness and respect and generosity at the youngest ages.

It is a high calling to be a parent. If you don’t plan on being a good role model, don’t have kids. It is hard work to be a hero, but it is in your job description. Parenthood is not for wimps.

If you’re looking for a book that is easy and fun to read, you should check out Dave Meurer’s book.
